Schematic Correspondence and Idealized Structures ( 1970 )

چکیده

Note that the footnotes have been changed slightly (their numbering and, in one case, the general form). This is because I have not been able to figure out how to use ’1*’, ’2*’, and ’3*’ as footnote references in TeX. (In the German there is a difference between footnotes by Bernays and footnotes by a later editor; the former have ’1’ and ’2’, the latter ’1*’, ’2*’, and ’3*’ as labels.) Note in particular that I collapsed footnotes 1 and 1* into one, for the reason just given. (See also the corresponding comments attached to the footnotes themselves.) Notice also that I have translated “Begriff” as “notion”, not as “concept”; e.g., in “notion of a group”. This may have to be adjusted, especially if the other translations use “concept” throughout. (I used “notion” because it seems more general and less technical, thus in accordance with how Bernays uses “Begriff”.)

Optimal Design of Geometrically Nonlinear Structures Under a Stability Constraint

This paper suggests an optimization-based methodology for the design of minimum weight structures with kinematic nonlinear behavior. Attention is focused on three-dimensional reticulated structures idealized with beam elements under proportional static loadings. The algorithm used for optimization is based on a classical optimality criterion approach using an active-set strategy for extreme lim...

Figure 1: Schematic of the Idealized Sidewall Aneurysm Model (left) and Camera and Fluoroscopic Shots of the Five Devices Implanted in Silicone Models

Brain aneurysms are abnormal ballooning of intracranial arteries which when left untreated may result in fatal outcome for the patients. Neurovascular stents have been used extensively in stent-assisted coiling treatment of aneurysms. Treatment with flow diverters (low porosity, fine-mesh stents) is used for complicated aneurysm geometries not amenable to coiling. Angiographic analysis with mat...

Vowel Harmony and Disharmony in Tuvan and Tofa

Harmony systems are often described in the linguistic literature in a highly schematic and somewhat idealized fashion. Further, instances of disharmony within harmony languages typically have been treated as exceptional or anomalous, rather than as a natural and expected part of the harmony system. In documenting several vowel harmony languages indigenous to Siberia, we found both highly patter...

Event Driven Objects

A formal consideration in this paper is given for the essential notations to characterize the object that is distinguished in a problem domain. The distinct object is represented by another idealized object, which is a schematic element. When the existence of an element is significant, then a class of these partial elements is dropped down into actual, potential and virtual objects. The potenti...

DISCRETE AND CONTINUOUS SIZING OPTIMIZATION OF LARGE-SCALE TRUSS STRUCTURES USING DE-MEDT ALGORITHM

Design optimization of structures with discrete and continuous search spaces is a complex optimization problem with lots of local optima. Metaheuristic optimization algorithms, due to not requiring gradient information of the objective function, are efficient tools for solving these problems at a reasonable computational time. In this paper, the Doppler Effect-Mean Euclidian Distance Threshold ...
